I’ve been reading and listening to podcasts about “earthing” or “grounding” over the last year. I finally decided to do a deep dive and bought the book “Earthing” by Clinton Ober, Stephen T. Sinatra, M.D., and Martin Zucker, and I’m blown away by the science and testimonies.
It turns out that the “feeling” you get when you walk barefoot on the beach has some real science behind why we love it so much. Here are just a few of the benefits of grounding or earthing.
- Reducing inflammation
- Boosting antioxidants in our body
- Improving sleep
- Promoting healthy blood flow
- Reducing cortisol
An article published in 2013 by the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine showed that walking barefoot “reduces blood viscosity, which is a major factor in cardiovascular disease”.
Blood viscosity is the “thickness” of the blood, the lower the viscosity the easier it is for your blood to flow through your blood vessels. Long story short, walking barefoot substantially lowered the instance of unwanted blood cell clumping in every one of the subjects and promoted healthier circulation.
A later study in the same journal found that “grounding” or “earthing” may help regulate both the endocrine and nervous systems as well.
Chronic inflammation is correlated with almost all age-related diseases. We have a new name for this “inflammaging.” There is much you can do with the foods you eat, proper sleep, lowering stress, restoring good digestion, and taking anti-inflammatory supplements such as Omega-3 fish oil and Turmeric, but what if there was something you could do for FREE?
Inflammation is a response to an infection, a pathogen, or damaged tissue. We want a good immune response, the problem lies in an immune response that starts attacking other tissues. When your body creates an immune response it also creates “free radicals” that “steal electrons” from healthy cells, thus causing even more damage and inflammation.
Earthing, which saturates the healthy tissue in your body with negative electrons (which are the good guys) works to neutralize these free radicals, in turn protecting you from the outlying damage they would otherwise cause.
Sleep and Stress
Another study done on subjects who slept with a grounding mat for 8 weeks showed better sleep, lower cortisol, restoration of the circadian rhythm, and pain and stress were eliminated or lowered significantly in all subjects. How would you love that??
Arthritis, Lupus, Allergies, Autism, and More
I could go on and on with stories of people seeing significant changes in their health after starting a daily grounding habit. Reading the “Earthing” book was so inspiring that we decided to give it a try! We purchased two grounding mats. I use it while I’m at my desk (like right now), placing my bare feet on the mat. My husband has his in front of the couch, and while watching TV plugs it in.
It is suggested that you use them for a minimum of 30 minutes a day. If someone has a serious health challenge, chronic pain, cancer, auto-immune disease, etc. I would suggest the sleeping mat so you get a full eight hours, this seems to give the best results for serious illnesses.
Of course, you could go out on your lawn or find a patch of dirt and sit in a chair with your feet in the dirt, and that’s free! We choose to get the mats so we could make sure and do this every day.

What an amazing time we are living in! Science keeps confirming what our ancestors knew in their souls. From fasting to grounding, they intuitively knew that these practices were good for their bodies. We can certainly incorporate these simple practices into our lifestyles, for free, and reap the benefits that science has now proven.
