We’ve all done it, set a New Years’s resolution to eat better, lose weight and get fit.
92% of us fail, why is that?
Being in the health business for over thirty years and having seen the decline of our nations health in a very real way with the rise in Diabetes, and heart disease, cancer, and auto-immune diseases and obesity. Having worked with hundreds of people who don’t want to go down this road I can tell you a small percentage stick with their goals and accomplish them. Further more they typically make it about one month then they are back to old patterns and habits. The average in the U.S. is 8%……8% of the people who set resolutions at the beginning of a new year succeed.
Why do 92% of the people who make a New Year’s resolution fail even if they have a strategy or plan?
The definition of “strategy” is, “a plan of action or policy designed to achieve a major or overall aim.” I know you have used this in a business setting because with ANY job or business (including being a stay at home Mom) you must have a plan.
Let me share with you a couple of strategies so that YOU can be that 8% person this year!
Can VS Want……..
We all WANT something:
Maybe we WANT to lose 10lbs in two months, we WANT to make more money. Or perhaps we WANT less stress, perhaps we WANT to exercise four days a week. Often we WANT better relationships, or we WANT a higher spiritual connection, we may WANT to travel more etc. etc. So we make these BIG goals then we put together a plan and dive in. Then what happens?
Usually we find out this is harder than we thought and takes more time. It requires a tremendous amount of discipline, and in addition it is not supported by family, work or friends, and doesn’t allow for life “stuff” that interferes, so we quit! It’s SO much easier to slip back into old patterns when this happens. So how do we prevent this?
We do what we CAN!
An Apple a day keeps the doctor away is no joke. Simple steps DO make a difference! Perhaps you CAN eat one more fruit or vegetable a day? Or consider, adding in one day of simple exercise such as 30 minutes of walking, perhaps you CAN set a “date” night, maybe you CAN you get up 15 minutes earlier and make a lunch? CAN you volunteer once a month? Do you “feel” the simplicity of this versus the pressure of the BIG goal?
Does that mean I don’t encourage goal setting? NO!! Set a goal to lose 20 pounds this year and set a goal to learn what foods cause you to keep that weight on. Set a goal to exercise every week. Set a goal to have a better relationship with your spouse, kids, family or friends. Then do what you CAN do verses focusing on what you WANT.
Here is what a simple CAN DO plan will accomplish with weight-loss.
If you currently aren’t exercising, you can start small and aim to burn even just 100 calories per day (walking briskly for 12 minutes will do this), which would add up to 700 calories per week, and in 5 weeks, that would be 3500 calories, which is equal to one pound.
That would be 10lbs lost in one year! Isn’t that better than GAINING 10lbs?? CAN you do this???
What if you ALSO stopped eating something that you know is not healthy for you (like a soda or Starbucks) and also eliminated another 100 calories per day? You’ve now lost 20lbs in one year!! CAN you do that? Did you know that by losing 20lbs you reduce your risk of heart disease by 75%!!
Here’s the cool thing….once you do something you CAN you feel so good you do more!!!
Ok, I also know we are an inpatient population that want results FAST! This is where the challenge comes in, staying with something long enough to get your desired outcome faster than one year. My next Blog will tell you how you CAN do it faster AND stay with it!
