We keep hearing that those that are “immunocompromised” are at a higher risk for COVID-19, but what does that mean? Do you think of a person who has been going through chemotherapy? Do you think of a person in an assisted care facility with advanced age? What comes to mind for you?
What About This?
Someone with Metabolic Syndrome…..high blood sugar, high triglycerides, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and a high BMI (body mass index). Would you consider this person to be immune-compromised? Well, the answer is yes!
The National Center for Health Statistics shows our obesity rate at 39.8% of adults and that another 31.8% of us are overweight. That puts us at 71% of the population either overweight or obese! Along with that comes Metabolic Syndrome, auto-immune disorders, fatty liver, diabetes, high inflammation, acidosis, cardiovascular disease, higher risk for cancer, unbalanced hormones and low immune function (just to name a few).
That puts 71% of the population at a higher risk of getting a severe case of COVID-19!
I believe this is the single biggest threat to our health and it continues to grow, year after year. To say this is easy to fix would be a lie. Talk about confusion, one health guru say’s eat Keto, one says eat Vegan, one says eat Raw, one says eat the recommended food pyramid and it goes on and on. So who do you believe and what can you do?
Do Your Genetics Matter?
I’ve been doing genetic testing for the last five years and it has been fascinating. Looking into someone’s “book of life” can reveal so many mysteries and help a person often get to the root cause of a long term health problem. So if we do genetic testing can we tell you what you should be eating? I can do a “Diabetes Predict” genetic test that gives us a good look into whether a person is at higher risk and what diet and supplements can be helpful for that individual. It shows that a person may have Insulin Resistance, reduced insulin production, that they may do better on a Mediterranean diet or better on a high protein diet. We can also do a “Diet and Wellness” Panel that shows things that impact weight such as inflammation, mitochondria function, and methylation. No one single genetic test can give us all the factors involved in weight-gain but we can often find the roadblocks.
The one thing I know is “one size does not fit all!” I’m going to use myself as an example. I found out that I have genes that make me a “fat absorber.” When I eat a high-fat diet (like Keto) my cholesterol goes through the roof and I just don’t feel good. I can eat a moderate-fat diet, full of healthy fats like olive oil, coconut oil, and grass-fed butter, but I’m not a candidate for Keto.
What Else I Know
You must eat real food! What is real food? Think about your great-grandma and what she fixed for her family. My great-grandma was born in the 1870s. They used lard (no Crisco back then), real butter, they ate from either their gardens or local farmers, they canned their own food, they often had their own chickens, beef and pigs. They didn’t eat large quantities of meats because it was a treat. They made meals that “stretched” like soups, beans, and stews. They made homemade bread (before they introduced hybridized wheat) and yes, they occasionally had pies, cakes, and cookies, again a treat because sugar was a treat. There were no sodas, no energy drinks, no Starbucks, etc. etc.
To eat like this today you have to really work at it. You have to search out your suppliers, your farmers markets (or grow your own) you have to cook, yes, cook! How many of you are cooking more now that you’re stuck at home??? This can be a total lifestyle change for many people as we have gotten so used to drive-throughs, pre-made meals, frozen meals and things you can just grab and go with. I think right now many folks are having a big wake-up call on what it looks like to make your own food and eat at home!
Having worked with hundreds of people over the years, either doing individual nutritional consultations, genetic consultations or taking people through my 10 Day Detox, when people eat real food, the body responds! Sometimes we have to get the root cause under control, such as poor digestion, unbalanced hormones, sleep or stress, but when we do, the body starts to shed the pounds. It wants to release the fat!
Is This Your Wake-up Call?
You can’t wear a mask, gloves and then fill your grocery cart up with high sugar, bad fat, processed and packaged food and hope to protect yourself. I saw a lady the other day fully covered up with a grocery basket full of quarts of sodas! I feel bad because I know this stuff is addictive, I know that many people just have no idea what it is doing to their bodies, and I know many people are living in fear right now of getting COVID-19.
If you identified with any of the health challenges I mentioned above, now it is time to get serious. We don’t know if this virus will take off again in the fall, we don’t know if they will have a vaccine or medicine and I don’t think we have time to sit around and wait. It’s time to take our health into our own hands!
Let Me Serve You
I’m available for consultations via Zoom meetings. We launch our 10 Day Detox April 13th (registration closes 4/10), and GX Sciences (where I get my genetic test kits) has dropped many of their test kit prices during this pandemic. As you know, I’m passionate about good health and I believe you and your body are amazing and that you both desire to achieve and maintain optimal health!
