Nutrigenomics: The study of how genes and nutrients interact.
Simply put, the field of nutrigenomics is helping to explain why some people can eat a high fat diet and NOT get heart disease and the next person eats the same diet and GETS heart disease. Or why one person gets cancer when they seemingly are doing “all the right things” and the next person who eats junk and smokes like a chimney doesn’t.
I’ve been in the field of nutrition for over thirty years. If you read “about me” you’ll hear about my husband getting cancer at an early age even though he was “doing all the right things”. We where puzzled as to why, but focused on supporting his body through nutrition to never have it return. Fast forward to 2016 when we where introduced to Nutrigenomics and had his genes mapped out….WOW! We opened his “book of life” and saw EXACTLY why he got cancer so young!
Certain genes can affect the rate of absorption, distribution, metabolism, or excretion of almost everything we consume. And these differences can result in extreme variability in how we respond to the foods we eat, the air we breathe, the water we drink and what gets absorbed through our skin.
Do you load up your plate with fruits and vegetables and assume they are doing all the wonderful things in your body that you’ve read about? Do you take nutritional supplements and assume they are improving your health?
