We are in the midst of the cold and flu season and by now you have heard of the Coronavirus that the U.S. is very concerned about coming from China. This is always a concern when we see a new strain enter our country but we also can be exposed to our common strains of colds and flu every single day.
The CDC reports that the flu virus has increased this week after a slight dip at the first of the year. I always correlate that to the kids going back to school and incubating those viruses! Have you had a cold or the flu this year????
We are fortunate that we have not had either a cold or the flu. It’s been so long I can’t remember when we last did. As you know, if you read my fall email, we do not get the flu shot and have not for over twenty plus years. We DO use a homeopathic formula for the season starting in the fall as our natural flu shot as well as increasing some of our supplements to give our immune system a boost.
What Do You Do If You Get a Cold or Flu?
We always have our natural pharmacy at the ready so if we start feeling a “touch” off we are prepared. Here are some of my top picks. If you feel even the slightest bit off, perhaps a headache, low energy, off-balance, weaker during exercise, achy muscles or your digestion is off, start on an immune program right away!!!
7 Ways to Tackle Your Cold or Flu Symptoms
You’ve heard that you either “feed” or “starve” a cold or flu. Starve your cold or flu. One of the largest functions in the body is the digestive system. Stopping incoming food the immune system can go tackle the cold or flu virus also eat “light” with homemade soups or bone broths for 24-48 hours to help the body out. Drink herbal teas like ginger or echinacea along with lemon water, you want to stay hydrated!
This could be a long list. Garlic (anti-viral and anti-bacterial), Echinacea which has been shown to reduce the duration of the flu. Ginger is anti-inflammatory and soothing to the gut (try making a ginger root, lemon, and echinacea tea!). Elderberry has been shown to dramatically reduce symptoms of colds and flu (here is a meta-analysis for you geeks out there Elderberry for Upper Respiratory Symptoms). Oregano oil is a natural antibiotic but make sure and dilute it down!
You may not be familiar with colloidal silver but it is amazing! You may have read about the “blue man” who took way, way too much colloidal silver and turned blue, there is always an outlier! Colloidal silver can be taken every 4 hours (use label directions) until the symptoms subside. It is antibacterial, antiviral and anti-fungal. This is easily found at a natural foods store.
I have written about the immune-boosting power of vitamin D. It should be onboard at higher dosages (get tested yearly to see what your actual dosage should be) during the winter months when we are not exposed to the sun. “Up” your Vitamin D if I am feeling run down and keep it up until all symptoms are gone.
As a child, an Osteopath was our primary care doctor. They actually did spinal adjustments when you came in for an office visit! I’m a huge fan of chiropractic care and specifically if I’m feeling a little run down. Spinal manipulation has been shown to increase polymorpho-nuclear neutrophils. These circulating blood cells are one of the first lines of defense against infectious invaders.
I did an article on Vitamin C. Pointing out its power to boost the immune system. The RDA is a pitiful 80mg daily (and few people are even getting that!). The ideal, ODI Optimal Dietary Intake, is 800mg daily. It’s water-soluble so take smaller dosages throughout the day. Truly coming down with the flu? Take 500mg every hour until I reach bowel tolerance (diarrhea!). This is a good diagram to follow for treating health challenges with vitamin C and dosages.
Zinc improves the performance of antioxidants that protect cells from viral infection and damage. It increases the immune response to defend against pathogenic activity including viral replication. Take 20mg every 4 hours during the daytime hours until your symptoms are gone. Then decrease to 40mg daily for one week to keep the system on alert!
So there you have a snapshot of our “natural pharmacy” that we can start on at the first sign of a cold or the flu!
Hopefully, you haven’t had the flu or a cold and won’t have any in 2020!
To your health,
